The UK’s exit from the European Union has had a negative impact on security on both sides of the English Channel. Now that Brexit is over, cooperation between the EU and the United Kingdom in defence matters remains necessary. In order to achieve this in the best possible conditions, and despite the present difficulties, the EU must seek to forge with London a comprehensive and far-reaching agreement that gives stability and predictability to this cooperation. Spain, under certain conditions, could take advantage of the opportunity offered to intensify its bilateral defence cooperation with the UK, thereby improving its own security and, ideally, acting as an honest bróker in favour of the necessary rapprochement between the EU and Britain.
